Mayor’s Message

Welcome to the 2011 Doors Open Whitchurch-Stouffville event! I encourage you and your family to take advantage of this special celebration of our community’s heritage.

The Doors Open Organizing Committee has selected twelve heritage sites from across our Town that demonstrate how our built and natural environments have evolved over time.

  • a massive collection of vintage and antique hardware;
  • guided hikes and wildlife specimens;
  • historical vehicles dating back to the early 1800s and beyond;
  • a beautiful home built in 1877;
  • a ride on a miniature steam-powered engine;
  • the lawn bowling club with a history that began in 1894;
  • a church built in 1892 with a treasured 76 year old pipe organ;
  • a centre of worship that has served the community for over 129 years;
  • an archery club, formed in 1956;
  • the inside of a 1953 Canadian Pacific Railway Caboose;
  • all-access tours of Fire Station 5-1;
  • a Victorian residence once a physician’s home and office.

This is certainly a unique opportunity to explore some of Whitchurch-Stouffville’s intriguing heritage treasures, most of which are rarely open to the public.

My sincere thanks to the property owners, members of the Doors Open Whitchurch-Stouffville Organizing Committee, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum, and the numerous volunteers who have made this day-long, free event possible. Congratulations on a job well done!

Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy our local history!
